Nuru Massage: the gel, the mat and the shower

A nuru massage is a menu word for a massage given on a waterproof mat with a slippery, odourless gel, traditionally made from seaweed. The therapist works with her body as well as her hands, gliding across the back and legs while the gel keeps every movement smooth. It is warm, slow and quiet, and the gel is what defines it.

In a Polish studio the order is usually the same. You arrive, you are shown to a private room, and you take a shower first. The mat is laid out on the floor or on a low platform, the room is heated so the gel does not cool, and the lights are kept low. Afterwards there is a second shower, because the gel needs rinsing off properly, and the time for both showers sits inside the booking.

A nuru massage differs from a body to body massage mainly in the medium: body to body is given on a bed or table with warm oil, while nuru uses gel on a mat. Tantra is different again. It is slower, built around breathing and touch from head to toe, and some menus add lingam or yoni massage, Sanskrit names tantra studios use for a session given to a man or to a woman.

Warsaw studios by district and opening hours

Warsaw has the longest list in Poland, and almost every studio sits in one of two central districts. In Śródmieście you find Cosmos Massage on Marszałkowska, Hidden Secret on Sapieżyńska, Tantric Paradise on Grzybowska, Tsambika on Smolna next to Hotel Indigo, Desert Rose, Loungegardens, Niebo I Chmury Warsaw on Solec, Orientmasaz, Salon Kleo and The Muse Massage. In Wola there are Blissful Massage Warsaw, Touch Magic on Sienna, Japanese Nuru Massage Studio, MT Imperium, Salon Eden, Sensoria and Shambala Erotic Massage.

Hours vary widely. For a late nuru massage, Sensoria lists 12:00 to 06:00 every day, Blissful Massage Warsaw 11:00 to 05:00 and Salon Eden 12:00 to 03:00 on weekdays. Cosmos Massage closes at 18:00, Touch Magic is closed on Sundays, and Tantric Paradise publishes no hours, so confirm before travelling. The Muse Massage publishes no hours at all.

Most Warsaw menus also list body to body, tantra and lingam, and several add four hands. Japanese Nuru Massage Studio lists nuru alone, and Orientmasaz lists sensual and nuru. Desert Rose and Loungegardens say in their own listings that they also come to your hotel.

Wroclaw and Krakow: where to look

Wroclaw spreads its studios across several districts. In the Old Town are Aura masaz erotic on Ofiar Oświęcimskich and Bogini Bastet on Kuźnicza, entered from Igielna. Orient masaz Wroclaw is in the city centre, Salon masazu VINNERI in Huby, The Touch in Szczepin, Winks Massage in Nadodrze and Hypnos Lounge Prive in Powstańców Śląskich. Tantra Touch, on Pochyła, publishes no district. Most open at 09:00 or 10:00 and close between 21:00 and midnight; Hypnos Lounge Prive keeps shorter hours on Tuesday and Wednesday. Every Wroclaw menu pairs nuru massage with tantra, and four hands appears at Aura masaz erotic, Bogini Bastet, Orient masaz Wroclaw and Tantra Touch.

In Krakow, Paradise Reef Krakow is on Starowiślna in Kazimierz, Erotic Massage Krakow Venus on Szlak in Kleparz, Heaven Massage and TK Platinum in Krowodrza, and Tantra SPA Krakow in Prądnik Czerwony. Eden VIP publishes neither an address nor hours. For a nuru massage after midnight, TK Platinum lists 10:00 to 05:00 every day and Erotic Massage Krakow Venus stays open to 04:00 from Monday to Saturday; Tantra SPA Krakow opens earliest, at 08:00. Heaven Massage is the Krakow menu that adds lingam and four hands.

Gdansk, Gdynia and the smaller cities

In Gdansk, Niebo i Chmury sits on Wałowa and Sensual Gdansk on Kamienna Grobla, both in Śródmieście; Niebo i Chmury opens 10:00 to 23:00 every day and lists tantra, lingam and four hands. Mystique is in Przymorze, opening 08:00 to 23:00 from Monday to Thursday and from 10:00 on Sunday, with no hours published for Friday and Saturday. Orient masaz Gdansk lists 09:00 to midnight daily but no address. Sensual Gdansk publishes no hours. Each lists nuru massage alongside body to body.

Gdynia has one studio, Vinneri, which publishes neither an address nor hours: ask for both when you write.

The rest is short. In Lublin, Orient masaz opens 09:00 to 23:00 and Strefa Masazu publishes no hours; neither gives an address. Szczecin has Masaz Szczecin in Śródmieście, closed on Saturdays, and Velvet on Langiewicza, open 10:00 to midnight. Torun has Desire in the Old Town and Bydgoszcz has Desire Bydgoszcz in Bartodzieje, both open 09:00 to midnight, from 10:00 on Sunday. Poznan has Imperium Elite on Garbary, in the Old Town, whose menu names only nuru and which publishes no hours. Outside the three largest cities, booking a nuru massage means one or two choices per city.

Nuru Massage: session length, four hands and price

Studios in Poland usually sell a nuru massage by time. Common lengths are around an hour or ninety minutes, and both showers come out of that time, so a shorter booking leaves less time on the mat. None of the listings here publish a list of durations, so ask the studio which lengths it offers.

Three things change the session. The first is length. The second is four hands, when two masseuses work together; it appears on many menus in Warsaw, Wroclaw and Gdansk, and it is usually priced higher than a session with one masseuse. The third is what you combine it with: some guests book a nuru massage after a tantra session or alongside body to body, which adds time to the evening.

No studio on this page publishes a price. The figure in zloty is given when you book, and it depends on the length, on one or two masseuses and on the hour. Ask for the full amount in writing, ask whether it is paid in cash or by card, and ask whether a hotel visit, where a studio offers one, is priced differently. Do not rely on a figure from another city or another year.

How to book and what to ask

Every studio here lists a phone number, WhatsApp or both, plus a website, and the page shows each one from its listing. Hidden Secret, Tantric Paradise, Touch Magic, Sensoria and The Muse Massage in Warsaw also list Telegram. Most studios outside Warsaw add e-mail, and Heaven Massage in Krakow lists phone, e-mail and website only.

A written message is the easiest way to book a nuru massage, because the answer stays on your phone. Ask:

• the lengths on offer and the price of each in zloty
• whether one masseuse or four hands is available at your time
• whether both showers are included in the time
• the exact entrance, especially where the listing gives only a street
• whether you can pay by card

For an evening nuru massage, a few hours of notice is usually enough on a weekday; for Friday or Saturday, or for four hands, write a day ahead. Studios that publish no hours, such as The Muse Massage, Eden VIP, Imperium Elite, Sensual Gdansk, Strefa Masazu and Vinneri, need a message first. If you are running late, say so before the start time.

Your first visit as a good guest

A nuru massage is given by a person at work, and the masseuse sets the limits of the session. What was agreed when you booked is what the session is, and nothing is owed beyond it. If you want to know what a menu word means at a particular studio, ask in your message, not on the mat.

Arrive on time and sober. The shower before the mat is not a formality: the gel works on clean skin, and the masseuse will expect you to take it. Leave jewellery and watches aside, keep your phone away, and settle payment the way the studio asked, usually at the start.

During the session, say if the room is too cold, if the pressure is too much, or if you would like to stop. Afterwards take the second shower, which the booked time already includes, and leave the room as you found it. A tip is welcome but not expected, and courtesy matters more. If something did not suit you, tell the studio afterwards in writing. A first nuru massage can feel unfamiliar, mostly because of the gel and the mat, and that passes within the first few minutes.
